Long before kayakers paddled through the calm channels or joggers laced up along the bayfront path, Mission Bay was known as “False Bay,” a vast tidal marsh noted by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo back in 1542. Over the years, this low-lying landscape became the outlet for the San Diego River, until 1852, when the U.S. Army constructed a dike to prevent the river from shifting back to San Diego Bay. Though that dike failed, it paved the way for today’s San Diego River Flood Control Channel, which now confines the river’s flow and prevents it from draining through Mission Bay, except for a controlled weir near the entrance.
In 1944, a forward-thinking committee from the San Diego Chamber of Commerce proposed transforming this underused marsh into a hub for recreation and tourism to help diversify the city’s then largely military economy. By the late 1940s, that bold vision took shape as dredging and land reclamation began in earnest. Over 25 million cubic yards of sand and silt were moved to form what is now Mission Bay Park, nearly all of it man-made.The result? A glittering, palm-lined playground for water sports, outdoor adventure, and laid-back leisure—crafted from a forgotten tidal flat into one of San Diego’s most iconic destinations.
Fast forward to today, and Mission Bay is a mecca for water lovers, outdoor adventurers, and families seeking sunshine and smiles.
With 27 miles of shoreline, including 19 miles of sandy beaches, Mission Bay offers something for everyone.
